Policy 102: Long Range Needs Assessment
Long-range needs assessment enables the school district to analyze assessment data and get feedback from the community about its expectations of students and determine how well students are meeting student-learning goals. The Board of Directors shall conduct ongoing and in-depth needs assessment, soliciting information from business, industry, labor, higher education, and community members, regarding their experience as evidence of adequate student preparation.
In conjunction with the in-depth needs assessment of the District, the Board of Education shall authorize the appointment of a Comprehensive School Improvement Advisory Committee representing the Board of Directors, district personnel, parents, and community members to make recommendations to and assist the Board in determining the priorities of the District in addition to the basic skills areas of the education program. At least annually, the Comprehensive School Improvement Advisory Committee shall make recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding progress toward the District's annual improvement goals, goals related to locally determined indicators, and the revision or formulation of the next year's annual improvement goal of the state indicators that address reading, mathematics, and science achievement.
It shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent to ensure the community is apprised of students’ progress on state and locally determined indicators. The Superintendent shall report annually to the Board of Directors about the means used to communicate with the community about student achievement.
As a result of Board and committee work, the Board shall, with the recommendation of the Superintendent:
- determine major educational needs and rank them in priority order;
- develop long-range goals and plans to meet student needs;
- establish and implement short-range and intermediate-range plans to meet the goals and to attain desired levels of student performance;
- evaluate progress toward meeting the goals and maintain a record of progress under the plan that includes reports of student achievement and performance, and results of school improvement projects;
- annually report the school district's progress made under the plan to the committee, community and Iowa Department of Education.
